Barbara Schumacher Lewis

September 16, 1923 ~ February 6, 2017 (age 93) 93 Years Old
BARBARA SCHUMACHER LEWIS, 93, longtime resident of Miami, passed away at her home in Cutler Bay on Monday, February 6th, 2017. Born in Ansonia, Connecticut to Paul Schumacher and Lillian Mayo Schumacher, Barbara was the second of six children who lived at the top of Dwight Street. She graduated from The Hospital of St. Raphael’s Nursing program in 1948. After her marriage that same year to her childhood friend and neighbor, John “Jack” Lewis, she accompanied him to Tuck School at Dartmouth College where they lived while Jack completed his MBA. Upon returning to Ansonia, Barbara worked as a traveling nurse in the surrounding areas until they relocated to Kansas City, Missouri in 1951 and eventually settled in South Florida in 1953. After spending years working with local Catholic charities, the Coral Gables Chapter of the DAR, and starting her eight children off on their paths in school; Barbara recertified as a nurse and returned to work as a Registered Nurse at Baptist Hospital of Miami in 1968. After a 20 year career, Barbara retired in 1988 to spend her time loving, laughing and living with her husband Jack until his passing in 2010. Jack and Barbara spent several months each year in Gatlinburg, Tennessee to enjoy the changing of seasons that didn’t happen in South Florida. While at home, they would have lunch several times a week at their favorite spot, Captain’s Tavern. They had many admirers wherever they went who enjoyed visiting with them and still remember “Mr. and Mrs. Lewis” all these years later.

Barbara is survived by her brothers, John (Ruth) and Jarvis Charles (Pat); sister Lynn (Joe); and sister-in-law Betty Lewis; children, Pat Keefe (David), Michael (Diane), Ken (Rhea), Kathy Weissinger (Steve), Mary, Ann, Peggy and Barbara; grandchildren, Ben (Rose), Ashley (Chris), Josh (Jenna), Katelyn (Jeremy), Matt, Lazaro (Sara), Haley, Jessica, Cameron, Jonathon, Nick, Joe (Brittany), Nathan, Michael, Sam and Berkley; great-grandchildren, Skylar, Lilly, Ariadne, Alexandra, Cash, Brecken, Veronica, James, Cameron, Emma and Temperance. Barbara has a large extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews throughout the country.
