Vivian Marcella Peters
Vivian “Vinnie” Marcella Peters, 98 passed away on Saturday, May 19, 2018 in Palmetto Bay, FL. She was born March 16, 1920, in Gillespie, IL, first child of the late Zeno L. and Jessie Sansam Stinnett. Vivian attended Gillespie Schools and graduated from Gillespie Community High School with the class of 1937.
She was 18 years old when she married Charles Wm. Peters on June 18, 1938, his 20th birthday. They lived in Carlinville, IL for a short time and then moved back to Gillespie. They were parents of one daughter, Phyllis, who survives. Her husband preceded her in death on May 22, 1995 in Miami, FL Also preceding her in death was a sister, Maxine Benish in 2011.
Southern Illinois was home for Vinnie and Chuck the first 18 years of their marriage. With family and friends all around they assumed this would always be home. They were active members of the Gillespie Methodist Church, where Phyllis first played piano and organ. They were always supportive of her endeavors.
In 1956 the family moved to Miami, Fl and Chuck started his career with Eastern Air Lines. They bought a home in South Miami Heights in 1959. Vinnie lived there until 2009 when she fell and broke her hip and could no longer live alone.
Vivian loved her family, always so proud of them and never hesitant to show pictures to one and all. She loved to read, play cards, bunco, games and work word puzzles. She had the “greenest” thumb, always working with her plants and flowers. She has been a member of Perrine-Peters United Methodist Church (now Cornerstone Church) since February 1960.
