Thomas Gilbert Moore
January 5, 1937 ~ February 1, 2024 (age 87) 87 Years Old
Thomas Gilbert “Tom” Moore, passed gently into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, on Thursday, February 1, 2024. Tom, who recently celebrated his 87th birthday, on January 5, passed away at home under the watchful care of his caregivers, and his long-time friend Reggie Whitehead. Tom was a man of great faith, and many talents and hobbies, chief among them was collecting postcards. His initial interest in postcards began around the age of eleven years old, and throughout his long life, he always reminded friends who were traveling, “don’t forget to send me a postcard.” He was a longtime member of the Tropical Postcard Club here in south Florida and served as it’s president, and treasurer for many years. Another hobby of his was as an amateur botanist, specializing in tropical ferns and fern allies, along with his friend, Reggie Whitehead. Together, they were the founding members of the Tropical Fern & Exotic Plant Society. To further their collection of tropical plants, they made 16 collection trips to the jungles of Borneo, Malaysia, Ecuador, Mexico, Trinidad, and Costa Rica, just to name a few exotic locales.
Tom originally from Tampa, Florida, arrived in Miami, in the mid-1970’s and taught mathematics (including Algebra, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus), at Miami Palmetto Senior High School. He was a well-loved teacher there, molding some of the great minds of our society, like Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.
As previously mentioned, Tom was also a man of great faith. He was Roman Catholic, and was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Tom who believed strongly in evangelization, served as the coordinator for RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) at St. Thomas for two years, and ushered in many people into the Catholic faith. Tom was also a spiritual leader in the church’s morning Rosary group, faithfully attending and participating, and staying for daily mass.
Tom was the oldest of two sons of E. Robert and Jean Martin Moore. He is predeceased by his brother Robert, and their parents. He leaves to mourn, his long-time friend Reggie Whitehead, his cousins Margaret Ann Millford and Mary Kathleen Fisher, and their children and families.
