Thomas E. Crowder

March 31, 1925 ~ January 21, 2018 (age 92) 92 Years Old
CROWDER, Reverend Thomas E, 92, passed away peacefully at his home in South Miami on Sunday, January 21.
Tom was born in Atlanta, Georgia on March 31, 1925 to Cornelius Hugh Crowder and Lorena Mae Green. He lived next door to his beloved cousin, Cavalene Fincher Harder, from whom he was separated for 50 years before they rediscovered each other online, in time to celebrate their 90th birthdays together with their families.
Tom joined the US Marine Corps in 1942 and served in the Pacific.
He received a degree from Emory University in library science and was appointed Director of Libraries at Mississippi State University in 1961.
He received a degree from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA and was ordained as a Minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 1966.
He served as Chaplain and Director of Coordinated Ministries at the University of Miami. Later, he worked as Associate Director of the residency training program in the UM Department of Family and Community Medicine. He was appointed Associate Dean of Student Affairs at the medical school in 1987, where he worked until his retirement in 2003. He was inducted into the Iron Arrow Honor Society in 1975.
Tom is survived by his wife, Teri Thompson; four children: Edward Dameron Crowder, of Winston-Salem, NC; Thomas Jonathan Crowder of Davie, FL; Elizabeth McRary Crowder of Atlanta, GA; Michael Faison Crowder (Kristina) of Simi Valley, CA; and ten grandchildren. He is also survived by his former wife, Mildred Smith Crowder of Asheville, NC.
Tom was a man of words—a reader, writer, poet and editor. He loved traveling, the New York Times and single malt scotch. He devoted his life to helping troubled people and working for civil rights, equality and peace. To many who knew him, he was a source of spiritual and personal guidance and inspiration.
There will be a visitation on Saturday, January 27, 2018 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Stanfill Funeral Home at 10545 So. Dixie Highway. A service will be held there on Sunday, January 28 at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to DOCS--the University of Miami medical students’ Department of Community Service (see umdocs.mededu.miami.edu). Tom would like that. And remember to drive carefully.
