Rita Ann Baker
February 12, 1944 ~ October 8, 2018 (age 74) 74 Years Old
Rita Ann (Jordan) Baker, age 74, past away peacefully on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Jackson South Hospital. She was born February 12, 1944 in North English, Iowa to Charles and Marie Jordan.
When Rita was a child her family moved to New River, AZ (just north of Phoenix). She was raised in the Seventh Day Adventist Church and attended Thunderbird Academy then went on to graduate from La Sierra College at Loma Linda University in San Bernardino. CA. Rita met her husband, Donald Alan Baker, while in San Bernardino who was stationed at Norton, Air Force Base in San Bernardino.
They were married on February 8, 1970 when Don returned from Vietnam then moved to Seymour Johnson, Air Force Base in Goldsboro, NC. While in Goldsboro Rita worked as a Social Worker in a small mental institution.
The following year they moved down to Miami, Florida where she called home for 47 years. Rita was an active volunteer in the Miami community. She volunteered with the Pinecrest Garden Club (Board of Directors in 2004) and Palmetto Bay Garden Club, The Villagers (1993-2014, chaired The Hunt Committee and Hospitality Committee), Miami Museum of Science’s Patrons (1995 – 2006; VP 2001-2002; President 2005-2006) and apart of Royal Palm Tennis Club; Coral Reef Yacht Club and her favorite “The Chickens”.
Rita was also a founding member of Miami Temple Seventh Day Adventist Church and was a vital part of the church community holding positions as the Head Deaconess, Cradle Roll Leader (6 years), Primary Leader (4 years), Junior Leaders (5 years), Pathfinder Leader (8 years), Vacation Bible School Organizer (10 years) and Lead the Missionary Desk for 25 years.
And in true Rita Baker fashion she went back to work in 2005 at Menu Men, inc. to assist her husband as they expanded the menu product line at the manufacturing plant.
Rita lived everyday loving and thinking of others. She was a tremendous mother, wife and friend. She loved cooking and hosting family dinner parties at the home for all occasions.
She was pre-deceased by their son, Brent Alan, in 1992 and her parents. She leaves behind her husband of 48 years, Don; their daughter Michele Ann (Scott) their children Brayden Alan (12) and Kyla Ann (10); son Darren (Jenny) and their children Ella (16), Aiden (15) and Kellen (11); brothers Bill Jordan (Tina) and JB Jordan (Patty).
In lieu of flowers the family has asked to please consider making a donation to the “Rita Baker Children’s Fund” so that they may continue to support the children in our community in her name.
