Nina Allan DeCarlo, a native Miamian, was born on September 30, 1949. She attended Southwest High School and later earned her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Florida and Master’s Degree in Social Work from Barry University. Nina worked for many years as a clinical social worker at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the former Purdue Medical Center before going into private practice as a marriage and family therapist. Always outgoing, caring, and upbeat, she made friends easily and was completely comfortable starting up conversations with total strangers, many of whom then became close friends. She was most invigorated being with, and having long conversations with, family and friends. She loved traveling, the outdoors and the wonders of nature, whether while travelling to new places or in her own back yard, planting and gardening, and all types of animals and birds, especially her pet cats and the wild ducks she encountered in nearby venues. She was an active member of Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in her youth and later of St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church since its opening in 1977. Nina is survived by her husband, Jeffrey; son, Stephen; brothers-in-law, Gary DeCarlo (Diane) and Louis DeCarlo (Karen); uncle, Samuel Raphalides (Laraine); aunt, Jean Raphalides; cousins, Selina Almirantes Duncan, Greggie Brea, Christopher Almirantes, Janell Almirantes, Christian Raphalides, Jason Raphalides and James Lakos; stepbrothers, David Porch, Doug Porch, Jon Porch and Steve Harper; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to the American Cancer Society.
