Tribute

Mary Anne Nichols of Palmetto Bay, Florida passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, after spending six days at St. Anne’s Catholic Hospice Center in Miami, Florida surrounded by family and friends. Mary Anne was born on January 13, 1935, at Oltore House in Caherlistrane, County Galway in Ireland. She was the daughter of Walter Keady and Gertrude (Coyne) Keady. She was preceded in death by her sister Kay Keady.
Mary Anne was also preceded in death by the love of her life, Charlie F. Nichols to whom she was married for 45 years. They met in Kenya, East Africa , while she was on holiday and Charlie was on a multi-year assignment with Eastern Airlines. They eventually moved to Miami, Florida, a place that Mary Anne soon began to love. She and Charlie traveled the world together and were well known among their many friends for the fabulous patio happy hours and dinner parties they hosted over the years.
Mary Anne attended school at University College Galway and Dublin University. She worked in hospital radiology departments in Dublin, Ireland; London, England; and Nairobi, Kenya. She retired after working in Miami for 32 years as a part-time Radiology Technologist at what is now Jackson South Hospital. Patients and co-workers often saw her riding her bicycle across US-1 to work , in the days before it was popular to do so.
She also spent many hours volunteering for local organizations including the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, Catholic Hospice Services, Coral Reef Subacute Care Center, and the Miami Council for International Visitors.
Mary Anne is survived by her beloved family in Ireland who will miss her greatly including her twin brother Tim (Mary) , her brother Tom (Kathryn), and her brother Walter (Suzanne); along with eleven nephews and nieces whom she adored.
She was also dearly loved by her American step- family including daughter Rebecca Koonts (Todd); daughter Mary Burley; former son in law Joseph Burley; grandchildren Nick Burley (Mary), Chris Burley (Alexa), John Burley, Rachel Koonts, Sarah Koonts and great granddaughter Ava Claire Burley
Two of her very special friends Tanya Rovin and Laura Hyams helped her an incredible amount after Charlie passed away in December 2020.
