Tribute

Maret Lilian Gregory, age 87, passed away on Thursday November 18, 2021 due to a wide assortment of ailments; a loving family surrounded her near the end of her earthly life.

Maret was born in Tallinn, Estonia in 1934 to Walfrid and Elisabeth Von Kastra-Kastan. During World War II, Estonia was repeatedly contested, invaded and occupied by Germany and the Soviet Union. She saw the worst of humanity at a young age, trying to survive in German forced labor camps, not knowing how her life was going to end. Soviet occupation did not permit her family to return to her country following the war. Fortunately, the American Catholic Church became proactive in its efforts to respond to this crisis and, by the early 1950’s, had resettled just shy of two hundred thousand Europeans who were displaced by the war – including Maret, and a small fraction of her family.

Taking advantage of her new beginning in New York City, Maret learned conversational and written English, received her U.S. high school diploma, became a U.S. citizen, and then she attended secretarial school where she was trained to be the best of the best. Her first post was at Allstate Insurance Company where she met the love of her life Henry J. Gregory, who preceded her in death in 1992. They married in 1958, had two beautiful children, and spent many happy years together living the American dream in Scarsdale, NY, Walnut Creek, CA, and Miami, FL. Maret lived a full life as a wonderful mother, homemaker, and team member. She took pride in her contributions at Greyhound Leisure Services – one of the first duty free players in the Miami cruise sector. She was renowned for not holding back her opinion and had a knack for telling it like it is.

Her son Glenn H. Gregory and his fiancée Maricarmen Eyzaguirre; her daughter Debra G. Nouss; grandchildren, Jack Henry, Casey, and Tallulah Nouss; her nephew Neil Khilnani and her niece Gita Frankini survive Maret. She loved all of them deeply she will be missed.

A beautiful life that came to an end, she died as she lived, everyone’s friend. In our hearts a memory will always be kept, of one we loved, and will never forget.

A memorial service in South Florida will be announced to friends and family under separate cover. Interment will be private at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Westchester County, New York. Tributes can be made on Stanfill Funeral Homes website at
