Lila J. Fornia

June 12, 1923 ~ February 24, 2022 (age 98)

Tribute

Lila Shannon Fornia, 98, of Miami, FL, went to be with her Lord, peacefully, on Thursday morning, February 24, 2022.

Lila was born in Norfolk, Virginia on June 12, 1923 as an identical twin, to the late Isabel Fryer. She was one of the last surviving members of The Greatest Generation. Growing up in Washington D.C., they felt blessed to have one another to share in life’s joys and sorrows. She was the daughter of Rosa (Outlaw) and Henry Clay Shannon, Jr.

Lila married Lawrence M. Fornia and raised a family of two children, Mary Louise (Fornia) Buczkiewicz (Richard) and Lawrence Fornia Jr. (Ana). Later in life, she assisted veterans by working at VA hospitals. After many years, she retired from the VA Medical Center in Miami, FL, where she made lifelong friends. Lila loved playing contract bridge and also enjoyed being an active member of her country club and St. Matthews Episcopal Church in South Miami. She was the family historian, enriching the lives of her family as she shared stories about their history. She always had an easygoing, natural smile and laugh over a cool glass of wine in the evening. She also had a wonderful outlook on life and offered wisdom and perspective when sought. She enjoyed sharing meaningful quotes. One of her favorites was “Forgiveness is the fragrance that the rose sheds on the heel of the foot that has just crushed it.” followed by a profoundly said “think about it” with a gentle head nod.

Lila will be lovingly remembered as a cherished grandmother of Scott Buckiewicz (Kim), Jeff Buczkiewicz (Tami), Kelly Wall (Alex), Tim Buczkiewicz (Sarah), Gamaliel Diaz (Jimmy Rivera), Rafael Ernesto Diaz Liendo; great-grandmother of Faith (Jayden), Huck, Blake, Emma, Logan, Ava, Anna Ruth, Goss, Anna Lucia, Alejandro, Hayes; a great-great-grandmother of Finn, a loving aunt to Susan Krutsick (Bernard), Ralph Stamp (Colleen), William Stamp (Charlene), Clay Stamp (Lisa), Kelly Puello (Ozzie); great-aunt and a dear friend to many.

Her life will be honored on Monday, May 9, 2022, in Washington D.C, as she will be laid to rest with her husband, Lawrence M. Fornia, in Arlington National Cemetery.
