Tribute

John Michael Ellert 68 of Boca Raton, passed away tragically August 8 when his car was hit head on by an impaired driver.  

John was born in W.PB.  the son of Capt. Michael John & Penelope(Poppy) Ellert The family moved to Coral Gables in the 50s when his father became a Captain in Miami’s fledgling Cruise  Industry,  the same industry where the majority of Johns career would be built.  He graduated from Coral Gables High School and Miami Dade College.  

John was a prominent within the maritime community who gained success in various management positions throughout the years. He began to work for Delta Marine Supply in the 70s and rose to become a leader in the industry until his retirement from W & O Supply in 2018.  John had the ability to relate to anyone he met with genuine interest. and always spoke from the heart. He was a mentor to many people who will carry on his legacy via Johns’ guidance both in business and in life.

John spent countless hours volunteering with charitable organizations including the S. Florida Maritime Lions Club.  He was an avid golfer and a fiercely dedicated fan of all Miami sports team particularly the Dolphins and Hurricanes.

John married Susan McGillicuddy Ellert in 1980.  They  were both sports fans and enthusiastic parents to several rescue pets.  John was pre deceased by his wife last December.  In addition to his wife,  he was also predeceased by  a sister Helene (Lana) Hand.

He is survived by sister Manya Lowman (Robert), nieces Alexandra Flinn (Eugene) and Michele Hand and nephew Michael Hand(Allison) several grand nieces and nephew’s and Godson John Gundry.


Funeral service will be held Saturday 12:30 pm at St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church Miami with interment at Woodlawn South. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, service will be private but friends may watch virtually on churches Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/agios.andreas.75. We look forward to a Celebration of Life with friends and family when we are able to gather safely. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent in Johns to St. Andrew G.O. Church. 7901 N.
