Joan Sconzo

March 4, 1933 ~ January 20, 2024 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Mrs. Joan E. Sconzo passed away peacefully at home on January 20, 2024 at the age of 90. She was born Joan Nava on March 4, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY to Dominick and Gaetana Nava. In the 1950’s she worked as an executive secretary for the US Navy of which she was always very proud. She later married Frank T. Sconzo, MD in 1956 and raised four children who were always the center of her life. She took comfort from her Catholic faith, lived life to the fullest and loved to have fun with family and friends who affectionately called her “Cookie.” She had many passions in life and was particularly fond of games of all sorts, including golf, tennis, mahjong, and bridge and she always was the first to have the latest electronic device to play computer games. She loved experimenting with all forms of artistic expression including oil painting, Japanese ink drawing, and pottery. Above all she was passionate about food and didn’t hesitate to give feedback! She was very proud of her Italian heritage and excelled at cooking many Italian dishes, always prepared “the way we do it!” She was a consummate New Yorker, always referring to it as “my city” and was a connoisseur of sushi long before it was mainstream. She always had a close knit group of friends with whom to share wine, food and good times, and an occasional martini. She was preceded in death by her dear brother, Vincent “Jimmy” Nava, her loving daughter in law, Kim Sconzo, and her mother “Gert” Nava with whom she lived for many years and relied on her unconditional love and support.

Joan is survived by her 4 children, Frank Sconzo, Bruce Sconzo, Betty Jean (Keith) Simmons, and Regina (John) Lepore; 5 grandchildren Nicholas (Elizabeth) Simmons, Veronica (Vincent) Sakk, Emma Lepore, Jaden Sconzo, and Sofia Lepore; great grandson Henry Sakk; and numerous nieces and nephews.
