Joan “Joanie” Diane Marshall (Also known as Joanie Caldwell)

August 26, 1933, to February 22, 2023 – 89 Years Old

Resided in Coral Gables, Florida

Joanie was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil – the daughter of James Edwin Marshall and Catherine Smith Marshall. Her father James founded Lojas Americanas SA in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil in 1929. She lived in Rio until moving to Florida when she was 16 with her family, who maintained homes in Miami Beach and Rio de Janeiro.

Joanie graduated from Kent Place School in Summit, New Jersey, Bennett School in Rio de Janeiro, Finch College in New York, and Miami-Dade Junior College.

She loved to socialize and was always the life of the party! She loved to entertain, loved to dance, travel the world, and dine out frequently. She was very proud of her family and so very proud of their life’s accomplishments, which she loved to share with everyone.

She was survived by two daughters – Dyan (Dynie) Caldwell Sanderson (Husband - Dana Sanderson) and Deborah (Debbie) Caldwell Downey (Husband- Jack Downey); two granddaughters – Lizbeth (Lia) Nicole Lasch and Lauren Alana Lasch; 4 grandsons – David Marshall Downey (Abigail Meyers), Donald (Don) Christian Downey, Charles William Downey, and predeceased by John (Johnny) Caldwell Downey and survived by one great-grandson – Theo Fleming Downey. She also had 3 step-granddaughters – Jessica Dodd, Miranda Sanderson, and Danielle Sanderson.

In Miami, Florida, she was very active in charitable foundations. Joanie was co-founder of Gilded Lilies which was affiliated with Easter Seals. Also, Co-Founder of Young Patronesses of the Opera. Member of the Junior League, Beaux Arts, Museum Guild and Miami Fashion Group.

Joanie was always a fun-loving, delightful person to be around. Joanie’s family were the loves of her life.

She will be deeply missed by her close family and friends who she dearly loved, and the so many who’s lives of people she touched along the way. She will remain forever in our hearts. Rest in Peace in your heavenly place to our dear Mother!
