Joan was born in Philadelphia, PA and raised in Elmhurst IL, daughter of Nicholas L. and Anna Feil. She graduated from DePaul University and earned her Master's Degree from the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine Biology. A pioneering woman in her field, Joan broke down barriers as a female scientist in the 1950s and was a successful published researcher.
Joan was a great supporter of the University of Miami (UM), a tireless volunteer at the Alumni Center and Rosenstiel, a mentor to UM students and the BIGGEST fan of the UM Women's Basketball team. Her dedication to the UM brought her joy, the highest honor as an initiate to the Iron Arrow, a member of the Golden Ibis and a legacy as large as the university itself.
Joan was dedicated to preserving the history of Miami, as an active member in the Natives of Dade and Miami Memorabilia. She was a supporter of Belen Jesuit Preparatory School where both her sons attended and many of their classmates called her their "second mom". She was most proud of the work she did to help gain the financing for its new location. A longtime parishioner of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Joan was a familiar voice and face to many from the lectern.
Joan was the epitome of kindness and selflessness and her positive spirit touched all who knew her. She was an elegant lady who was brilliant, clever, and witty. Her energy and passion for life will be missed by all who knew her. She was predeceased by her parents and two brothers Eugene and Robert Feil and survived by her sons Michael (Josephine Mei) and Patrick (Whitney Lochridge) and her 5 grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. Thursday, March 2nd at Stanfill Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Friday, March 3rd at 1:30 P.M. with a reception to follow until 6:00 P.M.
