James Willis Junkin Jr.

James Willis Junkin Jr. passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2017. He was 94 years old. Mr. Junkin was preceded in death by his parents, James Willis Junkin Sr. and Mattie Frances LaMar Junkin, his brother John LaMar Junkin, and his wife of over 50 years, Ann Lassiter Junkin.

Following graduation from Miami High School, Mr. Junkin attended Cornell University to study architecture. WWII interrupted his studies and he enlisted in the Army Air Crops where he was trained as a bomber pilot. At the end of WWII, Mr. Junkin returned to Cornell University, and graduated as an Architect in 1947. He was a long time member of the American Institute for Architects (AIA).

In 1942, Mr. Junkin married Mildred Scott and had four children. The surviving children are Dina (James) McFalls, Mimi (Thomas) Powers, James Willis Junkin III (Linda), and Hugh Scott Junkin. The surviving grandchildren are Skylar Tibbits, Genevieve and Lisa Powers, James Willis Junkin IV and Rozalinda Junkin (Josh) Pastor. Mr. Junkin and Mildred divorced in 1956.

Mr. Junkin married Ann Lassiter in 1958 and then settled in Coral Gables where he worked at a number of local architecture firms and eventually opened his own architecture practice. Mr. Junkin designed and contributed to many local buildings including the FPL Building and the Miami Metro Zoo (now the Zoo of Miami). Mr. Junkin was very active in the local Kiwanis Club serving as the secretary and treasurer of the organization in the nineteen eighties. Mr. Junkin was named Kiwanian of the Year by the Kiwanis Club of Kendall-Southwest Miami in 1993-1994. He was also a faithful church goer at the Coral Gables Presbyterian church.

The marriage to Ann brought many Lassiters, including Ann’s siblings, cousins and their children to their circle of family. Janis Meachum and William Lassiter are surviving siblings of Ann. Also surviving Lassiter family members include, Kimbal Parker, Robin Phillips, Laurie Williams, Doni Barnhill, Diana DuBois, Holly Faller, Scott Parker, and Shannon Drew Parker, all children of Janis Meachum, who have been a large part of the Junkin/Lassiter Family. Kathy Lassiter Criddle, a cousin and the daughter of William Lassiter, survives Mr. Junkin as does Michael Parrack a cousin of Ann Lassiter. Ann’s large family were a huge part of Mr. And Mrs. Junkin’s lives for their more than 50 years together.

During the last several years of Mr. Junkin’s life, he was devotedly cared for by Laurie and Felipe Williams, and direct caregivers, Caroline Valencia, Ligia Abarca, Josephina Jerez, Justin Cordero, Elizabeth Fabin Abarca, and Christian Williams.

Services will be held at the Stanfill Funeral Home, 10545 S Dixie Highway, Miami, Fl, 33156, on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at 11am.
