Tribute

Pfleger, Henry John, Jr. (Jack) 83 of Coral Gables, passed away suddenly on November 2, 2018. He is survived by Jeanie, his loving wife of 62 years.
Jack was born on January 21, 1935. He was the eldest son of Henry J. Pfleger and Margaret Swan. Jack was a long time Miami resident and attended Edison Senior High School. He went on to the University of Florida, where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and became a lifelong member of the Gator Nation. It was there, during her first week of school, that he met the love of his life, Jeanie Lake, of Coral Gables.
Jack and Jeanie married in 1956 and came home to Miami to begin their lives and embark on the journey of a lifetime together. They raised four children, a daughter and three sons, and cherished their time spent together in the North Carolina Mountains and Ocean Reef in the Florida Keys. Jack and Jeanie traveled the world, but always loved coming home to Coral Gables.
Jack, a Chartered Life Underwriter, was a member of the Miami insurance community for over 60 years. He founded Pfleger Financial Group in 1968, where he worked until his recent retirement. During that time, he was also Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Life General Security Insurance Company; he also represented all of South Florida as a General Agent for Mutual Benefit Life. His past memberships include the South Florida Estate Planning Council, the Advanced Association of Life Underwriters, and Executives’ Association of Greater Miami. Additionally, he served on the Board of Directors for Barnett Bank of South Florida for 14 years.
Jack was a member of the Orange Bowl Committee since 1975, a past President of the University Club and a past President of the University of Florida Alumni Association. Jack was also a member of Riviera Country Club, Coral Reef Yacht Club, Cotillion Club, Beach Colony, 20/20 Club and Grandfather Golf and Country Club. A lifelong Catholic, he was an active parishioner of St. Bernadette in Linville, North Carolina, and St. Hugh in Coconut Grove; he was also a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by his four children Jeanie, John, Jeff (Jenifer) and Jim (Jennifer). The highlight of his life for the last 30 years has been his role of “Poppy” to his eleven grandchildren, Michael (Jessica), Andrew and Sean Bonner, Jessica and Julie Pfleger, Jourdan (Jacob) Sheppard, Henry, Jeffrey and Katherine Pfleger, Jonathan and James Pfleger, and great grandchild Baron Pfleger.
He is also survived by his sister Mary Graves, brother Tom (Sylvia) Pfleger, sister-in-law Linda Pfleger, and brother Richard Pfleger. His little dog, Coco, will wonder where her best friend has gone.
He is predeceased by his son-in-law Larry Bonner and his brother Jim Pfleger.
He lived well and was well loved. We will all miss him dearly.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
A mass will be held on Wednesday, November 7th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Hugh Catholic Church, 3460 Royal Road in Coconut Grove.
