Hector Torres

Hector Torres, 52, passed away on August 14, 2017. Born in Cuba, Hector defected to the Unites States in 1991. Coach Torres played and coached fastpitch softball since the 1980s. In Cuba, he was named the Player of The Decade for the 1980s, was a four-time National Championship MVP, a three-time MVP at the Central American Championships and won Championships in the Pan American Games and World Cup. Coach Torres served as a member of the USA National Team Coaching Staff for the 2004 Olympics Gold Medal Softball team and has served in a variety of roles on national and international teams, including as Head Coach for the Spain National Women’s Softball Team. Hector also worked with the International Softball Federation helping to provide softball equipment and training to underserved youth throughout the world. Coach Torres has been a part of the Gulliver Prep family, serving as Associate Head Coach for the Gulliver Varsity softball team where he was instrumental in the team’s 2010 – 2013 4-peat state championship run. Hector is survived by his mother Maria Valeria Garcia Alonso in Havana, Cuba and an untold number of athletes, coaches and friends whose lives are better for having known Hector. A Celebration of Life will take place from 11am-2pm on Saturday, September 16, 2017 with a Memorial Service beginning at noon, at Gulliver Miller Drive Campus, 8000 SW 56 Street, Miami, Florida 33155.
