Grace Diann Shay (1933-2021)
Grace D. Shay entered into eternal life on November 6 , 2021, surrounded by her family. Grace is survived her four children and their spouses: Rodger and Corita Shay, Lynn and John Buchanan, Ryan and Nicole Shay, and Lori Shay. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Ryan, Alexa, Morgan, Sean, David, Shaylyn, Sloane and Brody and two great-grandchildren, Adeline and Owen. Grace is predeceased by her parents Providence and Salvatore Rapisardi, her brothers, Salvatore, Edward, and Vincent and by her husband, Rodger.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Grace and her family worshiped at Saint Bernadette Parish in Dyker Heights. She graduated from Lafayette High School in New York City and immediately began her career in finance as an administrative assistant on Wall Street at C.J. Devine & Co., where, several years later, she met Rodger. The two married in September of 1958, and Grace soon left her career to focus on raising her family. Grace and Rodger remained in the New York area until relocating to Coral Gables, Florida in 1981 and becoming parishioners of Epiphany Catholic Church.
Grace was an elegant lady that centered her life on love of God and love of family. She was a fixture at Epiphany Church, attending daily mass, serving as a Eucharistic minister, participating in spiritual retreats, and leading the Women’s Club. She enjoyed hosting parish and Archdiocese of Miami events at her home. She and other ladies from the parish often volunteered at the MacLamore Children’s Center and Camillus House.
Coming from a large, Italian immigrant family, Grace’s family life reveled in tradition, which she maintained and fostered. Open to friends and family alike, events were large, frequent, filled with love and laughter … and of course delicious. Grace was an extraordinary cook.
Grace’s love of God and love of family defined and inspired her life’s journey. She welcomed the stranger, gave generously of her time and resources to those in need, and was a dear friend to many. Grace will be missed by all who knew her.
