German Leiva

June 17, 1939 ~ May 14, 2022 (age 82)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of German Leiva, devoted husband, loving father, doting grandfather, loyal brother, and a true friend to many. He died peacefully on May 14, 2022, surrounded by his beloved family and only a month shy of his 83rd birthday. German was born in Bogota, Colombia to Jose Ramon and Susana Leiva and moved to Miami, FL in 1977. He lived his life passionately, achieving many successes professionally, loving intensely, and enjoying his many hobbies. His greatest and proudest achievement was creating a united family, for which he was the glue, hosting weekly Saturday dinners at his home. He, was the pillar of our family, always worrying about the minor and major challenges facing all his loved ones and consistently willing to lend a hand with his generous spirit. Up until his last breath, he was madly in love with Maria Camila, his wife of 44 years, and the two of them were true life companions working together in their professional endeavors and spending quality time with their most intimate group of friends.

German had a prolific professional career. He graduated with a BA degree in Economics, Latin American Affairs, and Business Administration and later earned his MA in Economics and Business Administration all from the University of Wisconsin, in Madison. He was the president and CEO of MFZ Management Corporation (formerly known as Miami Free Zone) since 1977. German was deeply committed to service in his community and was engaged in many charitable, civic, and philanthropic activities.

German leaves a beautiful legacy of values and was a model of how to live life fully and richly. He prioritized time with his family, worked ambitiously, gave back to his community generously, was a dependable friend, and relished in the simple pleasures of gardening, reading, doing handy work, playing tennis, and enjoying good wine and food with great company. He was a humble man of incredible integrity with his feet firmly planted on the ground that was adored by all who had the privilege of meeting him. God has received an amazing angel and here on Earth his legacy here on Earth will be forever remembered.

He is survived by his wife Maria Camila Leiva, son and daughter-in-law Felipe and Sabina Leiva, son and daughter-in-law Camilo and Andrea Leiva, son and daughter-in-law Rodrigo and Claudia Leiva, daughter and son-in-law Sandra Leiva MacLean and Jeffrey MacLean, step-son and his wife Juan Felipe and Ana Maria Thorin, and his grandchildren Emiliano Leiva, Mason MacLean, Rafaela Leiva, Sebastian Leiva, Mila MacLean, and Mateo Leiva, and step-grandchildren Sydney Anika Thorin, Kiana Thorin, and Bianca Thorin.
