Edward Dexter Saunders, 81, passed away suddenly on June 3rd, 2018; His big heart finally gave up.
"Big Ed" was loved by so many in his life. He was the son of one of the Pioneer families in Miami (Chandler/Saunders). He was a "larger than life man with a wildly inappropriate and hilarious sense of humor". Most people know him from Saunders Hardware, the family business, for over 60 years in Miami.
Son of Dexter and Irene (Morden) Saunders, Ed was born on December 3, 1936 at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL. He attended Coral Gables Senior High and was an active member of the Marching Band. He attended University of Florida where he graduated with a Business Degree and was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha (PIKE) Fraternity.
Ed met his wonderful wife of 61 years, Patricia Ann Bennett Saunders at Coral Gables Senior High and they were married in 1957. They have 4 wonderful children, 9 Grandchildren and 4 Great-Grandchildren.
Ed served as President of the National Retail Hardware Association, President of the South West Kiwanis Club & Business Inc., Commodore of the Fleet at Coral Gables Country Club, President of the Tenth Holers at the Coral Gables Country Club and his favorite group The Dirty Dozen compiled of die hard Hardware store owners and their devoted wives!
He enjoyed traveling and was an avid fisherman and golfer who loved the Florida Keys until his health started to decline.
He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered for his sense of humor and love for his family.
He is survived by wife of 61 years Patricia Ann Bennett Saunders, Brother James (Patty) Saunders and Sister Pat Saunders. Children: Debra Saunders Gronvold (John), William Saunders, Richard Saunders and Michael Saunders (Mary), Grandchildren: Shelby, Kristyn (Jason) Wilczek, Katie, Stephanie, Sean, Heather (Joshua) Merrill, Tim (Julie), Nick and Chelsea.
Great Grandchildren: Cole, Jackson, Eleanor, Amelia.
There will be a memorial service and visition with the family on Saturday, June 16th at 2pm to be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church (11295 SW 57th Ave, Pinecrest, FL 33156).
