Charles J. Neumann, 92, of Miami, passed away peacefully, on November 14, 2017, surrounded by his family. Born in New York, but has been a Miami resident since 1955. He is survived by his devoted wife, Betty of 66 years, 5 children and their spouses, 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, with the 5th on the way. His entire career was as a meteorologist, specializing in tropical cyclone forecasting and research. He graduated from MIT in 1946 and University of Chicago in 1949 with a Master’s degree in Meteorology. During his service as a hurricane hunter in 1953, he contracted polio. He retired from the Navy spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair with a remarkable career. He was the chief weather forecaster at Homestead Air Force Base, an aviation forecaster at the Miami airport, a member of the NASA Lunar Landing Team and a forecaster at the National Hurricane Center(NHC) where he joined the NHC research and development team. During this time, he developed and coded many of the hurricane prediction models used by the NHC. After his retirement, he joined a major defense contractor, SAIC, as a Senior Scientist, specializing in global cyclone research. During his lengthy career, he published hundreds of scientific articles and received numerous awards and medals. His most recent being the Robert and Joanne Simpson Award in 2016 for his role in the advancing of tropical forecasting. His hobbies included model railroading, woodworking, and gardening.
