There are so many fond memories of Mr. Landon but a few of mine are being on the elevator with him when he was in the front he would face everyone as he spoke to you and asked how you were doing. He made you feel like he truly cared and that the company was one big family and that you were an owner of the company. That made you work hard to ensure that the company was successful. Another memory was after Mr. Landon left the company he and my husband served on the FIU board together and we were at a retreat one weekend. I decided to go over and say hello and introduce myself as working at American Bankers. He immediately said I know who you are and proceeded to tell the person he was talking to about how he was proud of how I had grown and advanced within the company. That meant so much to me at that time because I did not even know he knew my name. His legacy will live on and we all have such fond memories of him that we can cherish forever. He will truly be missed!!!!

A memory I have of Mr. Landon was during the time I was an Admin in the Markets, I remember you knew he was mad about something when he called you by your last name and you could hear him coming down the hall. Oh the memories... I loved this man. He was such a real person. No matter what his rank was he had no problem sitting in the same cafeteria with his employees. No one will ever compare. South Florida has lost a great man. He will definitely be missed.

In 2007 I was at Barry for a softball game and walked over to the University Center and saw Mr. Landon's name on the building and thought, " I work for him !" I guess starting here at ABIG it just always stays with you. He was very kind when I would run into him in the elevator first thing in the morning with his tie over his shoulder or the gym. I am grateful everyday for the company I work for and what we have become and sad that his family and our community has lost such a dear person with truly a "heart of gold" RIP Mr. Landon Elaine

Mr. Landon was a great leader and difference maker in whatever he did. We all know this. But the quaility I most admired about him was how great a human being he was. He constantly showed us his humanity with his honesty (maybe too honest at times) and his desire to care for people and his community.

I always admired how honest he was. He was real and never a phoney. I know there are things he said that would never pass HR today but he always meant it for the person's benefit. Being honest with us really pushed us to be honest with ourselves. I know this kind of honesty is shaped and said differently in this era, but his kind of honesty was genuine and influenced many including myself to be better human beings and make others better as well.

In the end, being honest was his way of showing he cared about us. We all know about his legendary philantrophy activities and monetary support with the communities, charities and educational institution etc. However, what was striking about Mr. Landon is how this humanity or caring really came across in his actions when he was the President and CEO of American Bankers. For someone so accomplished and being in a position to maximize results for the company and shareholders, he always carefully considered the needs of the employees in his decisions and was uniquely accessible to anyone no matter your rank or position. It always felt like he cared about us. I think about the 10 year LESOP program he implemented to give all his employees the opportunity to own shares in the company and make us feel like owners of the company. The LESOP shares and its monetary value we received is probably the most money employees have for their retirement. How many people would do that for their employees today? In addition, Mr. Landon was always willing to listen and speak with anyone that wanted his opinion, guidance or advice. He did this for me on a few occasions and it was wonderful.

I've always said the difference between a good teacher and a great teacher is that the great teacher cares about its students. Well, you can say Mr. Landon is a great teacher, leader, and better yet, a great human being.

Mr. Landon - You have made a great difference in many of us down here and I know you will make a difference where you are today - Take it easy on the Man.

Rest in Peace my friend.

Kirk was a great man . Shortly after I retired my wife and I were having dinner with my cousins Pam , Eddie Garrison and Kirk . Kirk says to me "what do you do " and I replied I just retired after 33.5 years with Bellsouth . His response was "thats all well and good but what are you doing now ?" Several weeks later I was volunteering at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden because of Kirk's push to do more with my life . He had a way to inspire you . He will be greatly missed . Rod Perry

For me, he was the person who always believed that I could do the job. This did not mean that I was just getting the job.  He had big expectations and would push to continue to grow.

I think what made him popular among employees is that he didn't care if you were an executive or just a low level clerk. He would talk to you. Ask for your opinion. I remember the anniversary luncheons. He would invited employees for their 5, 10, 15, 20, etc anniversaries. Everyone knew it was not a free luncheon. He expected some kind of feedback.

He let each and every one of us soar and grow.  The 10 Commandments, while some were not 100% comfortable that he invoked that name, laid out what you could do to succeed - - even if failure was the result as he fully believed we all learned from our failures.  I remember the "it's not a real 'no' until you get a 'no' answer three times" gave everyone the right to ask why, or, why not?  He appreciated action, disliked inertia.  "You can't get in trouble for what you do, it's for what you don't do," again, even if it took several times to get it right, at least you were doing something.

While I give full credit to my parents for my values, it's undeniable that Mr. Landon helped me see that I could do pretty much whatever I set out to do if I worked hard and took advantage of the learning opportunities.

Miami-Dade County lost a great person today. Former American Bankers Chairman, R. Kirk Landon passed. I always recall the times we met when I started back in 1997. He was a great person, and I can only hope to give back as much as he had. #wewillmissyourkirklandon

He was a great man. I thank him for giving us this wonderful Miami campus and all its amenities - the gym, the fields, the schools, the cafeteria and more. So many of us have been lucky enough to have our children close by in the daycare and the school. I can remember him vividly after Hurricane Andrew and how he rallied the employees to come back to work and help to clean up the campus "our home." We brought in our own yard tools to help clean the property and we listened to him as he climbed a tree and used a megaphone to talk to us and calm us down.

All of us in the entire Miami community have a lot to be thankful for because of R. Kirk Landon. #wewillmissyourkirlandon

Kirk Landon was definitely a pioneer, purchasing acreage in South Dade so his employees could be centrally located in one building. His plan for the new office was a novel one at the time, building a ‘second home’ for employees with a cafeteria, tennis courts, fitness center, even a putting green. He had a passion for taking care of his employees, his “family.” He was one of the first to see the need for employer provided daycare to offer employees peace of mind by knowing their children were in good hands. Personally, my two children started in the daycare at three months old and graduated from our Assurant Satellite Learning School after fifth grade. I don’t know if I would have been able to focus on my career without the benefit of this excellent learning experience for them, and knowing they were in loving care. When I joined the Board of the Zoo Miami Foundation, I learned more of Kirk’s contributions to the South Florida community. Eric Stephens, Director of Zoo Miami told me that ‘Kirk felt very strongly that connection between American Bankers and the Zoo, because of the tremendous damage we both suffered in Hurricane Andrew. Because of his modesty he didn’t want the aviary named for himself, but for American Bankers Insurance Group – and added the word Family to the title.’ While Kirk was a very powerful and influential leader in business and society, if he was in the elevator with any of his 1,000+ American Bankers employees, it was amazing how many names he knew. It didn’t matter if you were a senior vice president or new data entry clerk, he had an uncanny ability to learn and retain names. I believe because he truly cared for his people. He will be missed.

What a loss. Don't know if I ever worked anyone who could come up with so many ideas, think outside the box, etc. And his philanthropy was most amazing. He will be missed by so many.

What a nice tribute. Mr. Landon will be truly missed by so many. I had the fortunate opportunity to work with Mr. Landon for several years before he retired. I say "with" and not "for" because no matter what position you held, he made you feel like you were an equal. His door was always open, and he made it a point to let us know. There were many times I would see him in the hallway getting to know his employees. Mr Landon taught me to do my best, and I live that every day in all areas of my life. I ran into him at the end of a day as I was coming back to work from the gym to wrap up a few things before picking up the kids, and with laundry over my shoulder. He said "Look at you, the sight of a real working woman. Thank you." He understood how tough it was, admired, and appreciated my efforts. A true leader. RIP, Mr. Landon.

I was introduced to Mr. Landon at a retirement party a few years ago, but I never knew him. Working in Miami, you didn't have to know him personally to understand the impact he had on the business, the community and the people who live and work here. He is everywhere, but mostly, he is in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. My observations of him are that he was the living embodiment of Sheryl Sandberg's (COO of Facebook) definition of leadership — "Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence." Mr. Landon has left quite a legacy and his impact will resonate throughout the halls of Assurant, across the globe and in the Miami community for years to come. If I could tell him one thing, it would be, "Thank you for demonstrating how one person can make the world a better place for everyone.

At the young age of 18 in 1986, I will always remember his booming voice telling Dottie to "Send her in!" for him to sign my first check request. It didn't matter who you were, how old you were, or what your experience, he treated us all the same and gave us all the same respect and attention. During Hurricane Andrew, he saved the company, our livelihoods, and for many of us, our dignity. Thank you Mr. Landon.

He ran his company like a father runs a family loving and stern; teaching and guiding; inspiring and enabling his kids to grow. His commitment to give to the community was ever present and he inspired others to do the same. It was expected, not requested. He planned to give it all away before Warren Buffet made the notion popular. He was the eternal optimist who helped define the rules of conduct for a few generations of business executives. Even those who left American Bankers took what they learned with them to create success at other companies. He was creative and a true innovator. I am very proud to have been one of his students.

Our relationship started as employee and employer. With the years, I grew to love and admire him. He had a way of touching everyone in a different way. He made you feel special.

To all of our Friends at Assurant,

Our hearts are heavy as we remember R. Kirk Landon.  Kirk was our champion – The Education Fund’s and all of Miami-Dade and beyond.

As Pam shared in The Herald article yesterday, his was "a heart of gold."

I truly thank Kirk for my two sons. I was very much on the fence about having children and was leaning on the side of not having any. Then we built the new building with that very convenient and awesome daycare center and decided to give motherhood a try. The daycare took away many of my early concerns of how I could work at a pretty crazy job and still be a good mother. I had lunch with my kids almost every day, we would go out to the lake and feed the turtles, and then I could go back and pat their little backs and send them off to naptime. Nirvana! Then came the elementary school.

The universe is a little more empty with Kirk's passing. One of a kind leader. More should take on his style.
