CHARLES, JOSEPH GERARD, 90, of Miami Shores passed away on January 10, 2018. He was born on October 18, 1927, in Brooklyn, New York, to Agnes and Thomas Charles. He was a man of great faith and was devoted to God and family.
He joined the U.S. Navy after graduation from St. Michael’s High School and served during World War II. Following his service, he graduated from Mount Saint Mary’s University. In 1959, Joe married Marilyn Greco and they raised their five children in Miami.
He joined Ryder System, Inc., in 1961 and had a 30-year career as an executive of employee benefits and pension. He served on various boards, including Florida’s Hospital Cost Containment Board, Florida Health Coalition and the Village of Miami Shores Pension Board. He was active in the Catholic Church serving as a religious education teacher, Eucharistic Minister and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Archdiocese of Miami Health Plan.
He was preceded in death by his sons Joseph and Timothy and by his siblings Thomas, Kevin, Sheila and Nancy.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Marilyn; his sisters Cathleen Charles and Moira (Jack) Hegarty; and his four children: Cathleen Charles; Jerome Charles (Tabitha); Maria McGuinness (Neil); Anne Smith (Gary); and grandchildren: Austin, Katie, Emily, Michael, Taegan and Caera.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday, January 12, at Stanfill Funeral Home, 10545 S. Dixie Highway, Pinecrest, and the Funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, at St. Rose of Lima followed by interment at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to The Joseph G. Charles Family Pastoral Scholarship, Mount Saint Mary’s University, 16300 Old Emmitsburg Road, Emmitsburg, Maryland 21727.
