Rodrίguez, Jorge Antonio (40) passed away on January 28th, 2018. Born in Miami Beach, FL., at about age 14, he moved to Longwood, Fl. He attended Lake Mary High School and was the center on the varsity football team. His life away from school was fishing with his buddies Joe and Rob. Jorge was born with a passion for the ocean. In his early 20’s he moved to Marathon, FL where he immediately sought employment with boats and water sports. Working his way up, he became a licensed captain and a diver. For the next 17 years, he remained in the Keys with exception of two short periods of time which he spent in Hilton Head, S.C.
Captain Jorge, as he was known, forged many friendships in the Florida Keys and South Carolina. His abundance of friends describe him as: generous, sunshine, insightful, a world of knowledge, caring, a legendary captain, helpful, loyal, dedicated friend and always saw the good in people. One close friend called him “salty”. Another described how Jorge helped change his life. He considered his Keys family as important as his blood family. He was well known by family and friends for the manner in which he told stories with so many pauses that one didn’t know if something was missed, or the pause was for a comment or he had finished it!
Jorge Antonio, preceded in death by his father Humberto (Tito) Rodríguez, is survived by his mother, Susy Garrandés Rodrίguez, brothers Humberto, Jose, and Carlos, sister Sara, paternal aunt Ana Corona, aunts by marriage Martha, Susy and Eileen, cousins, nieces, nephews, a grandniece, two grandnephews and a multitude of friends.
A Mass of Celebration of Life will be held at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 2987 W. Flagler St., Miami, Florida on February 9th at 4:00 pm.
