Joan Kosanke (nee Hooker) passed away peacefully at home on March 11, 2017 in Miami, Florida at the age of 85.
Joan is survived by her husband John Kosanke, and her four children: daughter Barbara McLoughlin and her husband Diarmuid of Brattleboro, Vermont; son J Kosanke and his wife Denise of Long Branch, New Jersey; son Bernard Kosanke and his wife Ann of Miami, Florida; and daughter Joan Cesarano and her husband Nicholas of Miami, Florida. She was Grandma to Allison, Jaimee, Ryan, Aja, Sean, Christopher, Alexander, Joseph, Kelsey and Laura and Great-Grandma to Michael, Lillian, Laila, Ava and Joseph. She is also survived by her brother Alan Hooker of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Thomas Hooker of Bricktown, New Jersey.
Joan was born on January 11, 1932 in Staten Island, New York to Thomas and Mathilda (Wilhelm) Hooker. She graduated from New Dorp High School in Staten Island, New York in 1950. Joan married her high school sweetheart, John, on December 9, 1951. They enjoyed 65 wonderful years of marriage.
Joan enjoyed playing and watching golf with her husband, solving puzzles, reading, Chinese food and travel. Her greatest joy was her family to whom she was devoted. Joan was the quiet force that shaped our lives and she is so much a part of the people we are today. She was the matriarch of a large and loving family, and will be greatly missed. We will always know how blessed we were to have her.
The family would like to thank the staff at South Miami Hospital and Compassionate Care Hospice for their care. We especially thank Jeanine Gedeon who has cared for Joan for four years and has become one of the family.
Visitation is at Stanfill Funeral Home from 4:00 PM to 6:00PM on Sunday, March 19, 2017. A funeral mass will be celebrated on March 20, 2017 at St. Richards/Holy Rosary Church at 11:00 AM in Miami, Florida. Visitation in Staten Island, New York will be from 9:30 AM to 10:45 AM at Hanley Funeral Home on Saturday, March 25, 2017. Burial will follow at Moravian Cemetery in Staten Island, New York.
