Don Dorshimer, former University of Miami football player, local coach and teacher, died on October 19, 2017 at the age of 83.  Don Dorshimer was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania. An All-American Football player in High School, Don’s impressive athletic talents brought him to the University of Miami on a full scholarship for track and football. It was on this school’s campus that Don met his beloved future wife, Joyce. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage. After graduating with a degree in Physical Education, Don, a selfless man, dedicated the next 35 years of his life to teaching, coaching and mentoring students in South Florida. With unwavering compassion and endless patience, “Coach” changed the lives of many students. It was a daily occurrence for Don that former athletes and students under his tutelage would seek him out to thank him for his guidance. Don loved his career and often said that his work was his play. He believed that if you chose a job you loved you would never work a day in your life. With this, Don lived a life without regret. Don also served in the U.S. military. In his retirement, Don traveled throughout the U.S. with Joyce. A man of nature, Don loved tending to his immaculate yard. He was an avid antique collector. In 2010, Don was inducted into the Lehigh Valley Sports Hall of Fame. His son, Donald Jr., preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; their daughter, Valery and her husband, Steven; granddaughter, Natalie and her husband, George; grandson, Logan and his fiancée, Amanda; grandson, Nicholas; and Logan's father, Scott. In lieu of flowers, a contribution in Don’s memory to a favorite charity of one’s choice would be appreciated. The family will receive friends at 11:00 AM with Funeral Service to begin at 11:30 on Friday, October 27, 2017 at Stanfill Funeral Home. Interment will be private.
