Betty Lopez Eber (1938 - 2017)

Beatriz (Betty) Lopez Eber passed away at her Miami home on September 30. She was born in 1938 and raised in Cienfuegos, Cuba. After attending Divine Redeemer Academy in Pennsylvania, she returned home to Cuba in 1955. That summer, she met and enchanted Victor Eber, who was a visiting professor at the University of Havana. They were married soon afterwards and made their home in Miami. Betty became an active member of the community. Among her favorite pastimes were “Pink Lady” volunteering at Baptist Hospital, parents’ activities at Christopher Columbus High School and Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, and the Epiphany Women’s Club. Betty and Vic were married for fifty years when he predeceased her.

After raising her two children, Betty became a locally prominent amateur orchid grower. Winning numerous shows and awards, she was a longtime member of the Coral Gables Orchid Society and the Coalition for Orchid Species. She had her hybrid, Betty Eber’s Joy, recognized by the American Orchid Society and instructed orchid horticulture classes at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. But her favorite role during thirty years of volunteering for the Garden was conducting tours for schoolchildren.

Betty was born a Roman Catholic Christian and lived a life of devotion to her faith and family. She brought kindness and joy with a smile, laugh, and welcoming demeanor and was beloved by all. She is survived by her sister, Leonor Alosio, her loving children, Steven (Cristina) Eber and Susan Eber (Scott) Masson, and her grandchildren Eric and Nicholas Eber and Elizabeth, Matthew and John Masson. The viewing is at Stanfill Funeral Home, 10545 South Dixie Highway, on Thursday, October 5, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The funeral mass is at Church of the Epiphany, 8235 SW 57th Avenue, on Friday, October 6, at 10:00 AM.
